If you believed that learning digital photography would be hard or take years to master, I am here to tell you that neither idea is true.

This editorial will show you some basic tips that should prove that learning digital photography techniques are quick and simple. Also, your photographs will get better from the very first click of the shutter.

This first tip positively proves why learning digital photography is so simple. It is used in art in general, not only for photography. Do not let its simpleness fool you, it is very powerful. This simple tip has refined my photographs the most.

This tip is known by the phrase "the rule of thirds". Most people and I am included, will take a photograph and the subject is in the center of the frame. To create a better photograph, move the subject off center.

Here is how it works, look through the view finder and with your mind, create a tic, tac toe grid that divides the screen into 9 equal squares. If the subject is centered on one of the four places where the lines intersect, the photograph should improve greatly and have stronger composition. I call these the power points. Believe it or not, it is that easy. And you thought that learning digital photography would be hard.

One more issue that I use to have, similar to putting the subject in the middle of the photograph, is the angle. This tip requires rotating the camera. Rotate the horizon to turn it from flat to angled.. If you want to make the photograph more interesting, you should tilt the camera and "boom" the picture has more character. What angle you ask? Try it at a lot of varied angles and see which one is best. Remember that every photo is unique.

When taking pictures using a tilted angle, it creates an off balance effect and shows something that they were not expecting. It takes the real world and distorts it slightly. It surprises the viewer.

The most important thing that I stress about learning digital photography is practice. Similar to learning to play an instrument, the way to get better is to practice.

These are a few simple tips to help make learning digital photography simple and fast.

Digital Photography Instruction – Understanding the ISO, F-Stops …

Getting a new digital camera can be a lot of fun, but also a bit confusing. I remember getting my first SLR, and flipping through the manual and wondering what they were talking about. There are three things that you really need to understand about your camera to get good quality shots, and these three things work together. The most important piece of digital photography instruction I can give you, is a basic understanding of the ISO, the F-stops, and Shutter Speed.

In my opinion the easiest to understand is the Shutter Speed, so I will start here. Basically, just like the name says, the shutter speed determines how fast the shutter opens up to allow the light to come into the camera. Shutter speed is usually expressed in fractions. Each fraction represents the amount of time the shutter stays open. For example, a shutter speed of 1/4 means that the shutter will stay open for a quarter of a second, and a shutter speed of 1/2000 the shutter will be open for one two thousandth of a second. Now if you are out in the bright sun you are going to want a faster shutter speed, as you will not need much light. If you are taking pictures in a darker area, you will need the shutter to stay open a bit longer. One piece of advice, the longer the shutter is open the greater the chance for a blurry picture. The camera will pick up on the slightest shake of your hand with a longer shutter speed. You will want to use a tripod if taking pictures in the dark, such as fireworks.

The next part of digital photography instruction I will share with you is understanding the ISO. ISO stands for International Standards Organisation. Basically it has to deal with how sensitive the camera is to light, with lower numbers of ISO being not so sensitive and larger numbers getting increasingly more sensitive. What does this all mean? Well, if you are in a well lit spot or can use a flash you are going to go with a low number ISO on your camera, if you are in a darker area and cannot use a flash you will go with the higher. The higher ISO can give you a more grainier look to the picture, but it is usually not very noticeable. ISO to a digital camera is what film speed is to a film camera. When using film you would usually use a film speed of 100 when shooting outside, and 400 or 800 for inside pictures. The great thing about using a digital camera is you can change this setting from shot to shot, as apposed to having to wait until you need to change the film.

Finally, I will discuss the F-stop also known as the aperture. Your f-stop determines two things when taking pictures. It determines how large the opening is on your shutter, which determines how much light can get in. The higher the number the smaller the opening. So, each click to the next higher number means that the opening lets in half of the light. For a bright area use a higher number, and a dark area use a lower number. The F-stop also determines the depth of field, which basically has to do with the distance from you to your subject, and the focal length of the lens. The smaller the aperture the greater the depth of field. This means that each time you click to a smaller f-stop more area behind your subject will be clear. So, if you want to take a nice large landscape picture you will want to use a very small f-stop. If you want an image with the subject close and in focus with the background blurry use a larger f-stop.

Author: Jennifer G Sullivan

These three things work hand in hand for getting a good quality picture. I had the opportunity to work with a wedding photographer, and it took me a while finally figure out how to get them to work together. Once I did, I was able to take some beautiful pictures. Figuring out the proper ISO, shutter speed, and F-stop will give you the opportunity to take pictures without using the flash, which gives you a beautiful natural shot. Now that you have the basic understanding of these things go to http://www.squidoo.com/digitalphotographyadvice to get some photography advice on getting good pictures.

Fine art photography dates back to the Victorian age when a new artistic expression was found. It is a professional work of art that that brings out pictures with a combination of artistic creative vision with prints and special effects. It has a special target group which comprises photo collectors and dealers.

The main aim of fine art photography was to create photos that closely resemble paintings. This was at the beginning of the 20th century, but with the passing of time and with development of better ways to carry out photography, this changed to the current photojournalism and aesthetic approach that has made it a common phenomenon to have pictures framed and glasses in a variety of sizes. All these are then used as well hangings and on the side as part of house interior designing.

For the best results in fine art photography, invest in high quality, reliable camera and keep in mind that lighting and staging greatly affects the quality of your photos. Cameras come in different sizes and with different capabilities. They range from medium-format to large-format cameras. You can also chose your camera depending on whether it is digital or not.

Fine art photography remains one way in which we can capture moments that will later in life form part of past enjoyable memories. One thing that remains however is for the media to be able to fully exploit this art and they will be sure to come up with some form of vivid representations of social issues in a way that has not ben experienced before.

Wedding Photography: How to Become a Successful Wedding Photographer

Once in while I receive e-mails or phone calls from aspiring or beginner wedding photographers asking me for advise on how to become successful in the wedding field. My first question is always what their motivation is to become a wedding photographer. Some will reply that they heard from somebody that it is easy money, or that they got a cool camera that takes great photos or that they would like to make some money on the side etc.
While it is true that wedding photography can be a very profitable business achieving success in the wedding industry is not just a matter of getting a camera and start shooting. Wedding photography involves artistic talent, human sense, complete mastery of photographic techniques, business knowledge, and a strong desire to learn and deliver the best to the wedding couple.

Here I have summarized some points that I believe will guide beginner wedding photographers:

1.Learn photography before anything else. A wedding photographer is expected to be a master of the craft. You will be in charge of capturing people’s most precious life moments. The wedding day is not the place to learn photography.

2.Just because you got a brand new camera it does not automatically make you an effective and reliable photographer. Photography goes beyond cool toys and gadgets. Learn composition and develop a unique artistic vision. Some of the great photographs of all time were taken with manual cameras.

3.Master the digital workflow, including color management, digital image processing, file management and image correction and enhancement.

4.Learn to love photography more than anything else. Don’t come to the wedding photography field with just dreams of making money. It is true that there are many successful wedding photographers that make a lot of money. However according to the Professional Photographers of America the average photographer in America makes about $24,000 a year.

5.Focus on delivering quality more than quantity. Seek with all your heart to capture unique photographs.

6.Develop a style that is recognizable and unique. Don’t try to be like somebody else. Clients look for unique photographers, with a unique vision.

7.Give wedding photography all your heart and effort. Long when you are gone your photographs will last forever. It is a great way to be remembered.

8.Open your heart and your mind and great photos will happen. Concentrate on the human aspect of weddings, the details, and emotions and be ready to capture them. Let the camera become an extension of you.

9.Share your technical knowledge and make connections with other wedding photographers.

10.Participate in wedding photography image competitions. It will give you the opportunity to have your work evaluated by peers and the motivation to improve your work quality.

11.Learn something new everyday. Take advantage of professional photography organizations such as Professional Photographers of America (PPA), WPPI, etc. Attend their seminars, workshops. Participate in Internet wedding photography forums and learn and share tips, tools and techniques.

12.Don’t neglect the business aspect of wedding photography. Learn to manage your business effectively. Take business courses and seminars.

Are Digital Photography Classes Right for You?

Unlike classes you took in school, digital photography classes are not only interesting but also a lot of fun. With the wonderful, affordable digital cameras available on the market today, digital photography schools are extremely popular. They teach you all aspects of taking digital photos including instructing you on the internal parts and mechanics of your digital camera. This helps a student to choose the right digital camera when the time comes to buy one. Digital photography classes start with an introductory lesson that gives you a general summary of digital photography and camera setup, so you understand what a digital camera and photography are capable of accomplishing. These classes usually concentrate on teaching the student the important manual mode of taking photos.

To become a great photographer, a student must understand and learn skills that give them control over how their pictures turn out. Depending completely on built-in automatic camera controls, such as auto flash, exposure or focus, does not always give you the best digital photographs. Taking consistently great digital photos requires both aesthetic and technical mastery, composition and shooting techniques. You learn about the fine points of taking a photo, such as in-depth composition training and details. Digital photography classes also teach you about editing your photos and processing digital photographs. They take you through the process of accessing stored images on the memory cards, along with great PC editing techniques and tweaks that transform even an average picture into a fabulous work of art. You also learn how to turn your digital images into a compact file so you are able to upload them onto the internet.

Digital photography classes teach students hands-on experience, by taking you on outdoor field trips. You learn theory in class but outdoor filming teaches a person about lighting issues. They teach you all about night photography and the problems you may encounter. They also teach you how filters tone down and correct photo tints, when you take pictures in full sunlight. Your teacher helps you deal with any photography issues you encounter while on an outing, that might not occur when you practice in a classroom setting. They work with you in different settings and locations to help you fine-tune your digital filming, resulting in great pictures every time. Because there are so many things a photographer is capable of doing with their digital images, such as printing, you learn the fundamental and basics of getting quality digital prints. Digital photography classes are a perfect way to learn about the art of digital photography, become knowledgeable and take great pictures. If you find you love taking classes and learning about digital photography, advanced classes are available for students thinking of entering into professional digital photography.

Guide to Glamour Photography

Many photographers do not find much difference between glamour and fashion photography. True they are similar in certain aspects, but glamour photography is more about photographing a female model with little or no clothing, while Fashion photography is all about the clothing! Glamour photography is not intended for endorsement purposes. During World War II, glamour photos were called pin-ups, and consisted of scantily clad movie stars. These were extremely popular among American soldiers.

It’s believed the most important change came with the introduction of Playboy Magazine! This was the first magazine to focus on nude models and its target was the mainstream male consumer. Hugh Hefner published the first issue of Playboy in December 1953 with Marilyn Monroe on the cover. Nude photos of Marilyn (the reason I started in photography), were also printed on the inside, which enhanced her image as a sex symbol and helped to subdue the public protest. In recent years popular men’s magazines have started a trend by focusing more on the "glamour" and less on nudity. Some of these magazines include Maxim, Stuff Online, and the UK’s FHM.

Photographing female models has evolved over the years, and as a photographer you need to understand this evolution before you can ever become a professional glamour photographer!

As a glamour photographer, there are some key elements that you need to master and understand. First you must understand the sharpness of your models eyes is critical. As a beginner with auto-focus cameras, most promising glamour photographers tend to focus on the nose, chin, or shoulder. This lesson is to learn how to focus on your models eyes while shooting. Photographers may experience a problem when using auto-focus cameras. This type of camera will tend to focus on the center of the image by default. Always be careful with your settings, and be sure to understand just how your camera operates!

Focusing on your Models eyes in the frame…

…Once this is done, you should depress the shutter-release slightly, to hold the focus, compose the model in the frame, and then push the shutter-release to take the photo. This technique may be slow learning however once you develop a feel for it; you’ll always find your subject’s eyes in focus.

Second, an important element of glamour photography is your choice of backgrounds. The use of backgrounds is the most important visual element after the model. If you don’t use the right background no amount of make-up, clothing or even the lack of, will allow you to achieve a great picture? A professional glamour photographer cannot ignore these elements as they are critical in achieving that award winning image!

Some of the best backgrounds to shoot include indoor and outdoor natural surroundings, a studio, beach, and even a bedroom. Start by experimenting; and soon you will find the right combination of these important glamour elements!

Not everyone will agree on what constitutes fine art, many years ago I was awed by the sight of the Sydney Opera House, and thought it was the most beautiful building In Australia. However I remember thinking that it perfectly complemented Australia, it would look pretty silly in the centre of Madrid. However if you don’t like the Sydney Opera House, then it does not matter how great the photo you are not going to like it.

How to Start a Fine Art Photography Business

The definition of fine art, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is "art concerned primarily with the creation of beautiful objects". With such a "wide" definition of "beautiful objects", the beauty is in the eyes of the photographer. Virtually anything can be fine art, a simple household item such as a fork, a nude body, travel, landscape, wildlife, a landscape. So whatever constitutes Fine Art photography is a pretty subjective decision. School of Photography give you a good idea of what will constitute in their view Fine Art photography.

For many photographers this is an ideal line of work, because it allows you to represent a part of your personality, through your work. It is possible to make a political statement by being a fine arts photographer. A clear analogy here would be the emergence of the acceptance of the gay male in photography, over the last thirty years. In it’s wide ranging definition it is possible to be more creative, and in this creativity be more personal.

There are a lot of resources on the Web regarding fine art. One of the better ones concerning resources and links is http://art-support.com/links.htm There are excellent links to photographers’ web sites, as well as grants available to the photographer. Because the definition of Fine Art photography is so wide, it has perhaps a more specific marketing need. Fortunately there are more ways to market them than just stock photographic galleries It may be advantageous for you to think about engaging the services of a full time sales representative. A sales representative will work with clients in the advertisement industry, the travel industry, and also graphic design firms. The advantage of employing a sales rep is that it leaves you free to create without the hassle of "cold selling". If you are not a natural salesperson, it may be better for you to consider someone else doing the selling. That person should also be able to evaluate the true value of your work, be experienced enough to know where to get the prices, as well as having a proven track record in negotiating the best prices.

There are other advantages as well. Companies using a wide and diverse range of photographs, such as advertisement agencies, will have more time for a sales rep, who has a large portfolio of work, from different clients, than from one single photographer. By the nature of their work sales reps are normally found in larger cities and towns, they will have a large client base of their own, and will probably promote your work in specialised areas, such as food photographer, or portrait photographer. So how does the relationship work? Normally the sales rep will already have their own business, and they will work for you on a commission only basis. You will pay them approximately 30 percent of the assignment fee, that is the net fee, not the final figure with expenses added on.

How to work out if this relationship will be advantageous to you, balances many factors. If you have developed a highly personalised style as a photographer, then you need to target specific areas to sell the photographs. Perhaps you do not live in a large city and have the right contacts. You have already made a portfolio of work that you would like to specialise in. It may not be cheaper for you to hire a rep, because you may still have to advertise locally to maintain your own business that you have developed, but you are paying a rep on extra sales that you did not have before. It will certainly increase the profitability of your business if you have no time to devote to increasing the number of your clients. You have decided that this path is for you, – how do you go about it. One idea is to investigate the names of the best advertisement agencies nearest to you, your local reference library can be of assistance here, as can yellow pages. You can phone them direct and ask them the names and the contact numbers of their reps. The Writer’s Digest publish an annual "Photographer’s Market Book", this book now lists photographic reps, and it will also help you market your work with lists of fine art reps, as well as galleries and stock agencies.

However you choose to market your business, the essence of what you need to do is to widen your client base. There is certainly more work in the marketing of certain photographs. However in today’s market place communication is as much as an art as creating the photographs. Not only is it important that you keep abreast with market trends, but you have to be in constant communication with your clients. Certain photographers’ enjoy the "Cut and Thrust" of aggressive marketing. If you don’t, then consider paying someone else to do it for you. Never underestimate the power of marketing, it is a very potent tool to help get your work shown to the people who are most likely to purchase it.

Do you really know as a photographer what you have to sell and it’s value. As a freelancer you can learn a great deal from advertising clients, They determine a niche for the product and then work on it’s development to promote it. A product is always promoted with a very specific client in mind. You must know your strengths as well as your weaknesses. For instance if you have a passion for taking seascapes, then it is pointless to advertise yourself as a portrait photographer. You need to find a way of getting your unique photographs to where they are going to maximise your profit.

As a photographer, you want to choose an area of specialization in order to make a name for yourself. Sensual female photography is a specialization that can be quite profitable for your photography studio. Sensual photos do not necessarily mean that the model will be nude, but there is obviously a market for art photography of the female form.

How to Specialize in Sensual Female Figure Photography

As a photographer, you want to choose an area of specialization in order to make a name for yourself. Sensual female photography is a specialization that can be quite profitable for your photography studio. Sensual photos do not necessarily mean that the model will be nude, but there is obviously a market for art photography of the female form.

Lighting is very important when taking sensual photos. If the lighting is too harsh the photo will look garish and that is the opposite of what you are trying to achieve. If you are unable to bounce light off of the ceiling, try draping scarves over the light fixtures in the room to give your sensual photos subdued lighting.

Showing just a portion of a female torso can provide the sensuality that you are looking for in your work. It is especially important to photograph the lines and curves of the female body form. A close up a your subject’s face that focuses on the lines along her jaw or her nose can produce wonderfully sensual photos.

You may be wondering how you can market your sensual photography. For starters, you can test the waters of stock photography. Stock photography houses are always looking for sensual female photographs.

In addition to the stock houses, advertise that your studio offers boudoir photo services. You would be amazed by the number of women that want to take sensual photos of them to give to their husband or boyfriend for their birthday or on Valentine’s Day.

One of the services that you should offer is the opportunity to take the sensual photos in the privacy of their own home. Some women will be self conscious about taking semi-nude photos of them in a photography studio, but will have no problem doing it in the comfort of their own home. Even better is to offer a discount if they get a girlfriend to have some boudoir photos taken too.

A soaring photographer should know the meaning of glamour images well, as its definitions are so infinite they can drive one crazy. Images depicting naked body and feminine curves do not automatically become glamour. There can be enough erotics in Glamour Pictures, making them sexually appealing and sultry, yet there surely can be no pornography about them. Actually, speaking of glamour images we should usually mean a mixture of sex and romance, desire and charms concocted together in a stunning combination to make a perfect glamour photograph – yet they should always possess some aesthetics. As an aspiring glamour photographer, one should have the knowledge and understanding of several things like equipment, shot types, background, lighting, etc, and a photographer should be inspiring to make the model feel at home to give a perfect shot.

A regular set of glamour photographer’s equipment includes many things, from lighting pieces to different lenses and backdrops. Many soaring talents cannot afford such an amount of costly gear, having to rent or borrow it, even being assistants, thus learning to handle everything by direct experience. You must have spotted that many glamour images are shot vertically, as if in opposition to the common horizontal format, in a fruitful attempt to develop some delivering concept. Moreover, if you look at the physical appearance of human beings, the face as well as the whole figure is vertical.

Props and background are other thing one needs to keep in mind in creating effective glamour shots. Though the model should be your primary concern, a good background can deliver the necessary amount of edge and atmosphere to your creation. There should not be any clutter in the background. Entourage and small details are not a must-have, though in some situations they might be of use. For instance, if you shoot a model on the beach, a surfboard can be a great detail and will add up to the picture’s mood.

All those fancy technical nuances put aside, manipulating light is the basic and the most essential skill an artist needs in order to truly master Glamour Photography. Photography is only possible due to light, and in glamour images it cannot be over-estimated. Light is crucial for bringing aesthetics onto the picture; it originates from a number of sources, and a glamour photographer who is proficient in manipulating light can create truly inspiring works.

Digital Photography – A Quick Guide to ISO

ISO should be one of the easiest aspects of digital photography to master, but many beginners in photography still have a hard time understanding this fundamental camera setting.

I suspect this is because of the way it is being taught. You see, ISO started out as a property of film, and it was much easier to visualise it in terms of the old technology. So that’s where I want to start my explanation, before bringing you into the 21st century with ISO today.

ISO actually started out as ASA, which stands for American Standards Association. Decades ago, a commercial film manufacturer came up with a set of numbers to define the sensitivity of different types of film. That set of numbers was accepted by the American Standards Association, so all American manufacturers could use the same system. Later, the American standard was adopted by the International Standards Organization, so ASA became ISO.

What does all that mean? Well, it means that the letters ISO didn’t really stand for anything except for the name of an organization.

What is important is what ISO referred to, which was the sensitivity of the film. The emulsion on some films reacted quite slowly to light, and on other films much faster. Slower films had a smaller ISO number, like 25, 64, 100. Faster films had a higher number, like 200, 400, 800.

A slow film needed a relatively high level of light to create a well-exposed photo. That meant that to take a photo in darker conditions, you would need to use a fairly wide aperture and/or a fairly slow shutter speed to get a result. On the other hand, a faster film reacted to light a lot more quickly, so it needed much less exposure to light to take a photo.

Fast film sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? A chance to take a photo in any conditions without a tripod, and to freeze moving subjects with very fast shutter speeds. So why didn’t everyone just use fast films all the time?

The answer is that the advantages of fast films came with a trade-off; loss of image quality. The grains of emulsion on a fast film were larger, so a photo taken on a film with ISO 400 or 800 had a rougher, ‘grainier’ look. This may not have been a problem in a small print, but became quite apparent with big enlargements. Consequently, most professional photographers preferred to use slower films of 100 or 64 ISO for most of their work.

So is this just a lesson in ancient history? After all, you have a digital camera, so what does all this have to do with you. Well, it may surprise you to know that despite the huge revolution in technology, the essentials of ISO have not changed one bit.

Your camera should allow you the option of adjusting your ISO setting. Just like in the days of film, if you set your ISO to a low number like 100, you will need more light to create a correct exposure. That means that you may need to keep a tripod handy for cloudy days, and in certain low-light situations you may not always get the aperture and shutter speed settings you want. If you set your ISO to 400 or 800, your camera will become much more sensitive to light; you will be able to shoot in exactly the same conditions without a tripod, and with greater flexibility to choose the aperture and shutter speeds you want.

But here is the amazing part. Higher ISO settings still come with the same trade-off that once existed with film. Along with the speedier sensitivity to light, you can also expect the image to have a grainier finish. I don’t know if it is pixellation, or digital noise, or a combination of both, but it is generally understood that for all their advantages, high ISO photos come with a reduction of image quality that becomes more obvious the more you enlarge the image.

So there you have a quick introduction to what ISO is all about. Perhaps I am just showing my age, but I find this subject easier to explain in old-technology terms. For many people it is easier to visualise when related to something solid like film, rather than something that happens on a computer chip. Anyway, I hope this helps you if you have had trouble understanding what ISO is all about.
