Portraiture, if you have the knack for it, is a very satisfying type of photography. To begin this digital photography tutorial, I’d like to start off by saying you have to have a knack for portrait photography, simply because it’s true. If you can’t put your subject at ease and get them comfortable sitting in front of a camera then as a portrait photographer you have a problem on your hands.

Your subject will turn out stiff and unwilling and it will come through in the photograph as well, and it won’t matter how good a photographer you are, or how much wizardry you can do with editing software. If the original photograph you take is flawed then there’s not much you can do about it except go back to the drawing board.

And by the drawing board here I don’t mean your photographic skills, but the need for you to brush up on your people skills. And don’t worry if the first ever portrait photograph you take is of the person looking stiff and unnatural, you just need to keep trying until you get it right.

Besides, most first attempts at anything invariably come out looking wrong so don’t get discouraged. It’s only when things are still looking decidedly dicey after about two years of almost dedicated portrait photography that you might want to think about brushing off those people skills you knew you had but which you haven’t been able to find.

For my very first portrait photography session, I hijacked my sister into being my willing victim – oops, I meant to say guinea pig – and I can tell you that the end results were disastrous to say the least.

After that I just forgot all about it and left my desire for portrait photography behind me. At this point I was into the whole film and processing thing, and I didn’t feel like wasting my time and money on something that I clearly wasn’t good at. I also knew that no matter how much I tried to brush up my people skills, that that was really as good as it got.

So there I was, and there was portrait photography, a seemingly unobtainable goal in my photographic life, until that is, of course, I bought my first digital camera. And I have to say that after that, whole new worlds opened up to me and I even went so far as to dream about doing some portrait photography as well.

Luckily for me, as the years had passed my people skills had also loosened up a little bit and I wasn’t so stiff-necked when I went into it this time. My photographs were still stiff necked, in the beginning at least, but they did improve with time and I can now take a decent portrait photograph without too much of a problem.

The moral of the story then?

The digital camera is good for experimenting with photography. And portrait photography is good if you can easily interact with your fellow human being.

But overall, don’t give up on portrait photography just because your very first shots were far from perfect. Give it a few more tries and don’t lose hope that you’ll eventually get something more than halfway decent.

Before I forget, I’d also like to point out that portrait photography need not only be about the traditional portraiture. You have many options open to you and whichever one you take depends to a large amount on your subject, or basically which type of portrait would display them best, and your own inclinations.

So just to give you an idea of what type of portrait photography you can look forward to, I’ve compiled a simple list for you to look into. There are obviously more types than the four that I’ve listed here, but hopefully these will be enough to give you a head start.

Digital photography is catching up and it seems that most people have already made the switch. For some people, it is because of convenience that they decided to switch. For some, they think it’s about time. But what does digital photography offer that has a lot of people getting into this age-old field?

First of all, digital cameras are unlike traditional film cameras. Whereas the latter depended on film, chemicals and a mechanical process in order to view your images, digital cameras now do not have such a limitation. With digital cameras, you do not even have to have paper on hand in order to see what you’ve taken. You can immediately see the images that you’ve taken at a press of a button. Whatever convenience that the non-electric cameras of yesterday offered, the digital cameras of today simply doubled.

Essentially, a digital picture is composed of a long string of 1s and 0s that basically represent minute colored dots or pixels that make up a digital picture. The usual method of taking a digital picture is using a film camera to capture the image on to the film, chemically printing it on photo paper and finally using a digital scanner to be able to digitally record the light patterns as different series of pixels. Nowadays, you can directly sample the original light values that essentially bounce off your subject and break it down into series of pixel values. This is how digital cameras work. Instead of having a strip of film capture the light that bounces off the subject, a device that is very much like a semiconductor that is contained within the digital camera captures the image as digital data. Then, after the data is recorded as a series of pixels of colors with different hues and tonal values, digital camera records that bulk of data in a memory storage device instead such as a removable memory card.

Since digital cameras do not use any film, they employ digital sensors which transform light values into varying electrical charges. This particular image sensor that some cameras use is called a CCD or a charge coupled device. There are other digital cameras which use a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) instead. Both types of technologies are able to transform light into electrons. These electrons in turn are then read by the sensor to display color values when viewed in the display screen.

Once you have mastered the basics of your computer, and have a good idea how to run your printer you are now ready for the challenge of using your digital camera.

You are really going to be impressed at how easy this really is. You just simply go out there and take a few pictures. Not the greatest to look at from the start but you have heard there is a way of fixing them on your computer. So you figure that you are just going to download them from the camera to the computer and its going to do the work for you, right? Well, not exactly, it will do the work for you but you need the proper photo editing software and you have to pilot that software into doings its job.

If you are looking for a quality digital camera, take a look at the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph. This newest model has an impressive 7.1 megapixel resolution. While megapixels do not guarantee better images, you can’ t refute the S500’s superior image quality.

Speed and sharpness tests proved the SD500 a top performer. Add in the enjoyable My Color feature that will most certainly please all types of users, this camera is fun.

In design, the Canon PowerShot SD500 is comfortable to hold and control. One note however is that the tightly positioned buttons on the back are easy to press accidentally during one-handed shooting. This camera boasts a large 2 inch LCD with an optical viewfinder located directly above that keeps a smooth, bright and clear image when panning.

Outside from the 7.1 megapixel ranking, the Canon PowerShot SD500 has most of the standard features of its division, including an f/2.8 to f/4.9, 7.7- to 23.1-mm (37- to 111-mm, 35mm equivalent), 3X optical zoom lens.

Both the mode dial and the menu system offer all the standard modes to include Playback, Auto, Manual (this adjusts white balance, ISO, EV compensation and color effects), Macro and Movie. VGA clips are captures at 30 frames per second in Movie mode. The menu system offers addition modes such as Stitch Assist (for panoramas) and nine preset scene modes.

The Canon PowerShot SD500 has a very perceptive user control system. It also offers an out of the ordinary shooting mode called My Colors. You can make blues, greens, or reds more vibrant, or lighten or darken skin tones.

Fantastic effects are created with the Color Accent and Swap Options. Color Accent allows you to isolate the color of one object, while the color information for the remaining portion of the photograph is removed. The result might be the bright yellow sun in the middle of a black-and-white sky.

In Color Swap mode, you select a certain color in a scene on the LCD, and then select the color you want to swap it with. For example, you could isolate the bright red of one car and swap it with the blue from another. You have to make your color selections before you shoot however, so make sure you’re not going to miss the shot.

Pictures are stored in SD memory cards with the CanonPowerShot SD500. There is also a direct connection to Canon CP Printers and select BJ Printers. This basically means that you do not have to have a computer to print pictures with these printers.

The Canon PowerShot SD500 uses proprietary lithium batteries. The promoted battery life is about 160 shots with the LCD on and about 550 shots with the LCD off. You can always buy extras at you local camera store to take along with you if a long battery life is important to you or needed for the situation.

Another feature seldom seen in other cameras is an optional DC coupler found in a flap on the battery/media door. This permits you to operate the camera off AC power by means of an optional adapter while you charge the battery in the external charger that’s included.

Overall the Canon PowerShot SD500 is a worthy contender in the market. A few faults to be found are that it has some difficulty finding the intended focusing point in Macro mode. Also in the Macro shots, the flash had a tendency to make most of the picture overexposed when used except for the lower portion of the image which would be dark due to the extended lens blocking the flash.

Another drawback is the mode dial design. Only the center (Manual) mode’s label shows as level when chosen. The other labels (Playback, Auto, Macro and Movie) are slanted when you turn the dial.

In general, the Canon PowerShot SD500 is a smart choice for an ultracompact camera. It looks impressive and provides excellent image quality. With the addition of some out of the ordinary features, you have a smart little camera that is sure to be a top seller.

Everyone wants to be able to create a beautiful image. Creative photography is a buzz word across the internet at the moment. People want to be more creative and learn to shoot images as seen in books and glossy travel magazines. Here’s how you can become more creative.

There is a difference between creatively and showing good technique in your images. A creative photographer uses all the principles and rules to their advantage but doesn’t rely on them for the final image. The dictionary definition of creativity is, "the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination".

So how does one learn to become more creative? I say this because all of us are creative, some just more than others.

1. Look for inspiration

What inspires you in life? Flowers, wildlife, abstract, people or landscapes? If it’s flowers then look at flowers. In your garden, on websites or books and magazines. If you are going create images from the things that inspire you then study them from different aspects, angles and perspectives. Get to know your subject. Without a good knowledge of your subject you won’t understand the best angles or features.

2. Take you time

Time, we all need more of it, but, if you take enough time with your photography you will reach the levels of creativity you desire. Have you ever heard of an artist or musician (speed painters excluded) who sits down and starts to paint at high speed? They take their time and ponder over what they are going to create. Sit down and observe your subject or scene. What parts do you want to focus on and bring out. What angles look better than others? Taking the time to get to know your subject will always increase your creativity.

3. Shoot frequently

You cannot expect to become more creative if you don’t take photos frequently. Regular photo taking will increase your creativity automatically. The bottom line here is to practise. You cannot increase ability if you don’t practice your art. You may as well stop reading this article if don’t determine that you’ll shoot more frequently. Here’s a little exercise to get you disciplined. Shoot a photo a day for 365 days. You can take on scene or area and shoot or shoot something different every day. Don’t let this replace regular photo shoots and outings. You’ll still need these.

4. Shoot intensely

What I mean by this is to take a subject and explore every possible shot you can think. Here’s another exercise that will help. Take an object, which could be a table fork or a soft toy and explore it photographically from every angle possible and then shoot it 100 times. The challenge is to take 100 different images of the same subject. Before you say, "no way", try it. It is very possible. Change the settings on your camera, focus on different points of the object and look at new angles. The more you take the more you’ll need to think and come up with creative alternatives.

5. Learn to apply the rules of good composition

Once you have shot your images, evaluate them. Are they balanced? Have you excluded clutter? Are you close enough? Could you have chosen a better angle? Get yourself a good book or article on composition. Most photographers fail to evaluate what they are doing and often leave it up to others. Looking at your images with a critical eye will help you evaluate whether the image that was in your mind was transferred to your sensor and a great image recorded. If it wasn’t then shoot it again. How can you improve the image the next time? Get friends to give their input. Taking a course or reading a book on basic photography will help you learn the basic rules. They support creativity and showcase your ability.

Creativity is not something only some people are born with. How it’s developed and nurtured is the important issue. By focusing on these five steps you will learn to be more creative and produce stunning images you never thought possible. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Happy shooting!

Dancing, yoga, art classes, crafts, gymnastics are quite popular, as fees are also reasonable for parents to pay. Teen girls get an opportunity to make new friends and also hone their talents that could be of use in adult life. It’s a fallacy that teen girls are only thinking of hooking boys all the time. Few are reading romantic novels but most of them are reading fiction and poetry and keeping scrap books as well. Photography is a proving to be a good hobby for young girls. Well, some girls like to be in front of the camera and some behind them! Rock climbing, cycling with friends, swimming are equally satisfying hobbies.

Most girls choose hobbies that will help to keep long hours with friends. And this does not mean an investment in mobile phones (a headache for parents) only. Join a drama club or create one for a friend is an ideal way to spend summer holidays. If not an actress then getting into creative production and styling is a good option for teenage girls. Learning nail art designs has also become the most popular hobby these days. As girls learn and have fun at the same time, they develop better personalities. When they volunteer for shelter homes, baby sit and walk dogs they become more responsible. Parents can guide the girls in becoming better adults by helping them to choose hobbies that will help them in later life.

When taking these classes make sure that you not only listen to the person instructing the class, but to the other models in the class with you.  They may have tips to share that they have picked up from working with certain photographers. 

Although the modeling industry appears cut-throat, those who work in it want to help others succeed as well.  By sharing with each other some of the photography modeling pose ideas, you can further your career, as well as the careers of others.

Teenagers

If you are one of the many teenage models out there wanting to get into the field, taking a modeling or acting class is a must.  In this formal setting, not only will you learn about the industry, but you will also learn the modeling poses you need when working for professional photographers that most often get booked for campaigns.

Kids grow up so quickly and while we are often left with countless memories, most parents have only a drawer packed with school photos, blurry holiday snaps and the forced grin of the inevitable yearly birthday picture to account for the years gone by. It’s time to stop bemoaning the latest photograph of your thumb obscuring your adorable baby and get on with improving your skills as a photographer.

Why should you bother when the near-by mall has a perfectly good photo studio, you ask? Photographing children poses specific challenges but yields numerous rewards. While it can be frustrating when you miss that spontaneous moment, it is also highly satisfying when you manage to capture the joy in their faces as they dance in the summer’s first sun shower. Capturing the day-to-day moments will provide a treasure trove of memories that you will cherish forever. As well, your own images take on a more personal feel and a more meaningful connection, something that can never be achieved in a generic mall photography studio.

Follow these easy steps and immediately improve your snaps of the kids.

Making The Unusual Usual

Friends with children often say to me "My child always pulls faces for the camera and I can’t get a picture without little Johnny sticking his tongue out and crossing his eyes." Kids –and many adults as well– are prone to hamming it up for the camera, however, they will be more natural if the camera is a part of their everyday life instead of brought out once or twice a year. By making it a regular part of their lives, it will increase the comfort level and encourage portraits that are more natural. Try bringing out the camera once or twice a week and focusing it on your kids. They will become accustomed to having it around and it will give you a chance to practice your technique, too. And, if they still clown around for the camera, get into the swing of things and enjoy it. Little monkey faces are a part of childhood!

Kids’ Eye View

As adults, we look one another in the eye and photograph our friends at eye level. Do the same for your children. Bend down on one knee or sit on the floor to get a picture that reflects a child’s perspective. To add a little excitement, have fun playing with perspective by shooting the image from the ground up. Lie down on the ground and taking a picture from that viewpoint. Suddenly toddlers become giants and we can witness the world as they see it, by looking up.

Patience, Patience!

Small children have a limit of two or three minutes before they become bored with Mummy or Daddy’s photo session. The urge to run off and play becomes just too much! Don’t force kids to stay in one place for long, unless you like pictures of sullen little faces. If you are taking a formal portraiture-style photo be sure to plan ahead for the best possible results. Check your batteries, make sure there is film in the camera and if you are using a digital camera see that there is space on the memory card. Provide your toddler or small child with a prop, like a ball or a favorite toy to help create a more natural expression, instead of the one that says, "Just hurry up and take my picture, Mom!" Keep it fun and stress-free.

Fill The Frame

Because backgrounds can sometimes be distracting, do not be afraid to move in closer and take a picture of your angel’s face. It creates drama and interest in the photograph and eliminates extra clutter. Unless you are taking a travel photo or an image of the child engaged in a particular activity, feel free to emphasize the most important element of the picture- your child. Use the zoom or macro tool on the camera to get in closer. Pictures of your little one’s hands or feet can also be interesting studies, and one day you may find yourself saying, "I can’t believe they were so tiny!"

Just A Little Off-Centre

Many professional photographers use "The Rule Of Thirds" approach which means that they mentally divide the frame into three sections both vertically and horizontally –like a tic-tac-toe grid– and place the subject of the photo at one of these intersecting points. It helps to create a more dynamic photograph, than one where the subject is smack-dab in the middle. Take note that if your camera is an auto-focus model, you may have to focus first on your subject and then, with the shutter button still half-pressed, recompose the image.

Natural Light Rules!

One of the tricks of the trade in photography is to use morning or late afternoon light. The sunlight at this time is wonderful and helps to produce pictures that are bathed in warmth. Direct light flatters the subject and adds to a more intimate and natural-looking photograph. It also helps to greatly reduce the bane of every parent photographer- red eye!

Experiment with taking advantage of the sunlight pouring through a window, or march the kids outside on a sunny day and photograph them while they are playing tag. To have a well-lit photograph make sure the light is behind you, shining on the subject. To create drama, try using side light for impressive shading. If you try to take a photo with the sunlight behind your children, a technique known as "backlighting", you will end up with the subject looking like a dark silhouette.

The Last Word

It really is all about fun. View the time you are taking to photograph your children as time to share in their adventures and imaginary play. A frustrated mom directing kids to a more picturesque location and insisting on a smile does not reflect kids’ reality. Pick up the camera only when everyone is relaxed and happy. Finally, don’t expect every photo to be a masterpiece. The truth is that only a few images from each roll are frame-worthy, but the important thing is to keep snapping away to capture the moments that depict their ever-changing lives, in all its unique glory!
